Wishing for some help during the Holidays?
Yes, we know its not even Halloween yet, but let’s be real—you and the retail world are already thinking about the upcoming holiday season. I’ve seen Christmas stuff in Michaels, in the grocery stores, and I am sure the kids in your life have come home with school fundraisers pushing wrapping paper and candy!
Before you know it, you are going to be consumed with aaaallll that busyness that hits the extreme levels in November and December.
You may even start “pinning” decorations, crafts, and cookie recipes. You are going to lose sleep at night trying to figure out how to wrap up work at the office AND get your spouse and kids packed to travel for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah or New Years. You are going to make a vow to eat healthy and exercise and then you’ll say ‘screw it’ at some point when the umpteenth tray of homemade cookies entices you one too many times (or is that just me??)
You are going to make a list of gifts to shop for, wrap and maybe ship off to distant loved ones. That list will haunt you because you’ll miss the sale days, stock will run out, you won’t have time to run out on your lunch hour, or you’ll simply be at a LOSS for what to buy that “person who has everything!” (We all have that ONE person who has everything OR just goes ahead and buys themselves whatever they need, leaving us poor uncreative folks with NO CLUE what to do for them!)
I’m here to tell you—it DOES NOT have to be this way! Your holidays CAN be easier! Wouldn’t you rather be present with the people, moments, and joy of the holidays than miss them due to lack of time and too much pressure? (It’s ok to say YES here!)
Before I give you the magical way to de-stress your holidays, I want to share some of my best tips to make your holidays happier and easier:
This by far is my number one suggestion. It’s extremely important to take some time out for yourself. Whether you schedule a massage or sip some hot cocoa in your favorite coffee shop. In order for you to function at your fullest potential, it is always important to listen to the needs of your body! This time of year and year round! As a registered nurse, I know all to well the lasting impact stress can have on the mind, body and soul. Oh – and if you see me in my van with the car running eating Fro-Yo all alone, just nod – smile and don’t tell my kids!!
Create a to-do list for yourself. Give yourself plenty of time. Break down your list over the next 4 weeks. When the holiday rush is over, tweak this list and save for next year! Make lists like “to buy”, “to do , and “to call” (Task Complete℠ should be in your Rolodex).
Trust me … I LOVE a good Black Friday sale. Yep … I’m out there at 3am. I go in with a very specific plan and am very organized about the entire process! Peek through the ads for this year and take inventory of the items you can catch at a discount. Check out www.bfads.net. Be sure you have created a master list of all family/friend/corporate gifts you need to buy. If you have a budget, this is the time to list it! (oh and don’t forget about all those teachers and bus drivers in your life too).
As You Buy the Gifts, Wrap Them!
This I learned the hard way … imagine wrapping for 4 kids and 2 families the week before Christmas!! … eek!
Now we wrap as we go. I will admit that as the kids have gotten older, there are far less games and trinkets to wrap, so it has certainly gotten easier. But if you know you’ll have a huge pile, start early!
Choose What is Necessary
Don’t feel obligated to do everything on your own!
- No, you are NOT required to bake everything yourself … go to the bakery!
- No, you don’t have to go to every party you’re invited to … be honest with yourself … aren’t some of them just boring anyway?
- No, you don’t have to make home-made gifts! You can buy them on Etsy (this is a great place to buy or sell handmade items)
